Barcelona FC president Josep Maria Bartomeu has resigned as tthe clubs President with his entire board of directors also resigning from their respective posts to avoid a vote of no confidence.
Bartomeu decision comes after intense pressure to step down with his board following Barcelona’s 8-2 humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League.
This saw clubs captain Lionel Messi hand in a transfer request ahead of the start of the season.
Bartomeu has been in charge of the club since 2014. The team won four league titles and Champions League under his tenure.
The club confirmed his resignation via a tweet on it’s tweet page, which reads;
“President Josep Maria Bartomeu announces the resignation of the FC Barcelona Board of Directors.”
